@Rob Cameron: Have you looked at what we're doing around the Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR)? And yes, I have a straight face as I'm typing this response.

After working with a language like Ruby and a framework like Rails, how can you promote something like .NET with a straight face? ;) Not to mention the anti-open source atmosphere, platform lock-in, etc., etc.

Advisor or Evangelist it really is just a word… as it’s the intent of how you connect with and support developers across this country that matters. It’s about what they do, how we can support their development, connect them to the right people, ideas, resources, enable them with the right tools, examples and support…so they can do what they do best…bring the magic of software alive!
I’m really jazzed about having you on the team, as you know intimately that we have to be committed to their success, support the industry and our measure to show we are going in the right direction is when we earn their satisfaction and build trust. So, no matter the approach you decide to take in the role…advisory or evangelism we need to earn their trust by our actions, support, products and engagement.

So, I’m cool…..it’s just a title and since I use evangelism in mine…..I can’t see why you shouldn’t
Take care,
John
Director Community Evangelism (Joey’s boss)

Leave it to Weird Al and "UHF" to describe something so deep in so few words. Nothing better to a geek's heart than this.

The adviser vs. evangelist discussion strikes me indeed as being typically Canadian. I moved to Toronto from London, UK, and for the first couple of months I was constantly shocked by the Canadian unwillingness to take anything that could be described as a stance.

It's annoying as hell, but now that I have embraced my reputation as an abrasive Euro-Brat I just do what I think needs to be done and to hell with it.

First of all, congratulations Joey. May the force be with you.

Please give advance notice via Twitter when you feel the urge to pontificate at Pub Night. I would hate to miss the pleasure of having Vader pick up the tab for my grapefruit juice.

Also for me, don't bother with the .NET stuff. But if you feel like speaking C# to me, I just may listen long enough to find out if there is enough in there to bother about. Just sharing my perspective.

Congratulations for getting paid to blog and play the accordion. My your fridges always be filled with pop (and maybe the occasional V-8 -- vegetables are healthy).

While I've left behind the world where MS matters from a development perspective (except inasmuch as we must cater to IE6/7 foibles), I'm not a reflexive MS-hater. I still think .NET, C#, and related tech is one of the more important evolutions in recent development trends.

I have to ask, though, from the point of view of a working developer: will you be using MS tools to develop production software? And if not, will you feel comfortable evang-er, advising software that you yourself aren't forced to deal with on a day to day basis while meeting deadlines?
