[...] LinkedIn Profiles are more Honest Than Resumes. I heard Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn’s CEO say this the other day. Sadly, there’s no backing data. It’s just an unsubstantiated marketing claim. Although it has a certain logic to it, a world with three year average career commitments is unlikely to produce the sort of consensual honesty claimed by the claim. That said, use this as an excuse to follow Joey DeVilla / Global Nerdy. He’s changing the face of Recruiting in Canada. Kris Dunn has some thoughts on the subject. There’s something here, however unsubstatiated LinkedIn’s claim. It should be fun to watch this meme proliferate. If this research is right and the half life of a friendship is seven years, the odds that social media can continue to make this sort of claim are kind of low. [...]

[...] LinkedIn Profiles: More Honest Than Resumes — Global Nerdy …Why is that true? Because there’s a community of co-workers, friends and past colleagues that always have access to the LinkedIn profile, and there’s no such community with constant visibility to a random resume the candidate sends in, and you have no means to circulate the resume to that type of community to fact check.
I believe your comment about honesty on linkedin is very true. However, I am reluctant to place my complete resume on linkedin. I want to make it interesting enough for the person to call me but not give away all the details.

Very believable. But what does it do to the old career advice that you should customize your resume to your audience?

Case in point is my current job, where my duties have shifted as needed between program management and hands-on technical work. In a paper world I would describe my current position to emphasize the part of the job that best matched what a prospective employer was looking for. In the context of LinkedIn I have to create a one-size-fits-all profile. (Consequently, and since I'm not job hunting, I pretty much don't describe my current position at all.)

Joey: I know you've made several posts about job hunting, with links to suggestions on things to do while unemployed to make you more employable, etc.

I can't find these through the tags and categories. Do you have suggestions on where I should start looking deeper?

(I want to pass the info on to a friend)
