Not a direct comparison but I do agree that mobile is huge now.
The first picture is from the Via Della Conciliazione (not even in the Vatican), while in queue to see John Paul II lie in state.
The second is when the new pope gave his Urbi et Orbi. So two fairly different events; one calling for cameras and the other not.
