About Joey deVilla

  • is the Thrilla from Manila
  • lives in Toronto
  • considers Boston his second home
  • is married to the Ginger Ninja
  • is a Developer Evangelist for Microsoft Canada
  • plays rock and roll accordion
  • looks like Harold, grooves like Kumar
  • functions in disaster, finishes in style

Joey deVilla got his first developer evangelism job after jumping in front of a news camera with his accordion at a computer conference. He regaled the camera operator with a Clash song reworded as “Should I Sleep or Should I Code?”, and when he returned, his employer said “You’re our developer evangelist now.”

After graduating from Queen’s University with a degree in computer science and a reputation as its second most notorious perma-student, he went on to work on a diverse set of projects, from interactive multimedia CD-ROMs for Toyota and EMI to custom desktop applications such as a directory of every shopping center in America and a training tracking application used by the Toronto Maple Leafs and the National Ballet of Canada to web applications ranging from games to domain name registration. He’s done developer relations work of all sizes, from an independent open source project for bypassing Chinese internet censorship to the internet startup OpenCola to Tucows to his current position as Developer Evangelist at Microsoft Canada.

Joey contributes to Microsoft’s Canadian Developer Connection blog and maintains two personal blogs: his technical blog Global Nerdy and his “life, the universe and everything” blog, The Adventures of Accordion Guy in the 21st Century. He’s very active in the Toronto tech community, often either hosting or helping out at some event. He started Coffee and Code, a weekly gathering where developers gather at café to work and share ideas over coffee, and he hosts the Toronto chapter. You’ll rarely see him without his accordion, and he likes to open his presentations with a rock or pop tune on his trademark instrument.
