The Greatest Traceroute Ever (or: What CCIEs Do When They’re Bored)

by Joey deVilla on February 9, 2013

star wars episode iv opening shot

This could be the best traceroute ever. Open up a terminal window and type the following:

traceroute 216.81.59.173

(If you're on Windows, use tracert instead of traceroute.)

After the first few hops, you should see the introduction to a grand space opera:

On windows you’ll have to increase the max hops from 30 to some larger number or it will stop partway through:

tracert /h 99 216.81.59.173

If you increase to 255 hops and set your target to obiwan.scrye.net half way through the Star Wars stuff it breaks out into a full RickRoll with the lyrics of Never Gonna Give You Up……. someone has far to much time on their hands…. BRAVO!!!!!!
