AWWW YISS: We’ll Soon Be Able to Use Our Electronic Devices on Flights, From Gate to Gate

TechCrunch broke the news: The FAA has posted a press release announcing that airlines can now allow the use of personal electronic devices (which they refer to using the acronym PEDs) throughout the flight, from gate to gate. They’re providing the airlines with a set of guidelines, and we can expect to see them put into action by the end of the year. How these changes will be put in place will vary from airline to airline, but the general idea is that you won’t have to put away your mobile device during takeoff and landing. The new guidelines should be in effect by the end of the year.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the FAA guidelines…

  • Lighter handheld electronic devices, which includes smartphones and tablets, must either be held or placed in the seat back pocket in front of you during takeoff and landing.
  • Heavier electronic devices, such as full-size laptop computers, will have to be stowed during takeoff and landing. It will likely be up to each airline to declare what sorts of devices are considered “heavier”. Would a MacBook Air be considered light enough to use throughout a flight?
  • Cellular service must be disabled — that is, no signal bars displayed — and can’t be used for voice communications; this is based on FCC regulations that disallow airborne calls using mobile phones.
  • The use of wifi is allowed if the plane offers in-flight wifi service.
  • Short-range Bluetooth devices, such as wireless keyboards, are allowed.
  • In rare cases where visibility is very poor and the pilots have to do an instrument landing, you may still be asked to shut off electronic devices. This is because some landing systems may not be tolerant of the electromagnetic interference from personal devices.
  • You’re still expected to put down your device or other reading material during the safety briefing at the start of the flight.
  • You’re still expected to turn off and put away your device if a member of the crew asks you to.

Each airline will implement them only after they’ve performed a safety assessment and have received FAA approval, but I suspect that everyone will try to fast-track the process, especially with the holiday season coming up. Delta have already posted an announcement saying that they’ve submitted a plan and you might be able to use electronic devices for the duration of the flight starting November 1. That’s tomorrow at the time of this writing.

I’ve got at least four flights scheduled this coming month, and I’m hoping they get these new guidelines into effect ASAP!

Mobile Hardware Roundup: Mobile Devices Now Bigger Than Consumer Electronics, Samsung Ships More Than Apple, LG and Nokia Combined, Motorola’s Modular Smartphone Platform, Google’s Smartwatch

Mobile Hardware Manufacturers Now Make More Money Than the Entire Consumer Electronics Market

According to the research firm IHS, the global factory revenue for smartphones and tablets will surpass the that for the entire consumer electronics market for the first time this year. Smartphone and tablet OEM factories are expected to rake in $354 billion by the end of the year, edging out consumer electronics OEM factories, who expect to make $1 billion less by then. This is the result of a big spike in mobile device demand, as consumer electronics factory revenue was 30% higher than that for smartphones and tablets only last year. IHS expects that smartphones and tablets will continue to grow past the consumer electronics industry, with their factory revenue outpacing that of consumer electronics by 35% in 2017.

I didn’t even know that smartphones and tablets were in a category outside of consumer electronics, which IHS describes as “a broad category that includes hundreds of product types, including televisions, audio equipment, cameras and camcorders, video game consoles and home appliances.”

Samsung Shipped More Phones Than Apple, LG, and Nokia Combined, Gets Nearly 29% of Global Mobile Phone Market Share

According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung’s 120 million phones shipped last quarter makes for more than Apple’s, LG’s, and Nokia’s shipments combined. While these figures are for shipments and not sales, Strategy Analytics’ Executive Director Neil Mawston says that aside from some Chinese vendors who may be sitting on inventory, and Apple, who may have more iPhone 5Cs on hand since they’re not moving nearly as well as the 5Ss, he doesn’t see much of a difference between shipments and sales.

Motorola’s Project Ara: An Open Modular Smartphone Platform

Remember PhonebloksDave Hakken’s concept for a modular smartphone that would let users customize their phone with only the components they want?

Motorola has announced Project Ara, whose goal is to develop a free, open hardware platform for creating modular smartphones. Their goal is to do for mobile hardware what Android did for mobile software: to create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, and speed up development.

Project Ara has been in motion for a year, and having met with Phonebloks’ Dave Hakkens, they’re now engaging with the Phonebloks community and sending out volunteer research scouts to find out how people make mobile device choices. In a few months, they expect to invite developers to start creating modules for the Ara platform, and expect an alpha release of the MDK — the Module Developer Kit — “sometime this winter”.

They’ll be announcing more on the Motorola blog, as developments take place.

Coming Soon: Google’s Smartwatch

According to reports, Google’s Android-based smartwatch is in late-stage development, and talks with Asian vendors to start mass production are already taking place. It’s expected to lean heavily on Google Now, which makes sense: a smartwatch is the perfect place to have “assistant” software that can quickly answer questions, make recommendations, and even predict what information you’ll need based on where and when you are.

32 Bits Ought to Be Enough for Anybody (or: Qualcomm’s CMO Gets Reassigned After He Calls Apple’s 64-Bit A7 Chip a “Gimmick”)

After calling the A7 — the 64-bit system-on-a-chip that’s in the iPhone 5S and new iPads — a “gimmick”, Qualcomm CMO Anand Chandrasekher soon found himself Qualcomm’s ex-CMO. It’s probably because Qualcomm are likely to be announcing their own 64-bit chips soon.

Here’s his career-changing quote:

“I know there’s a lot of noise because Apple did [64-bit] on their A7. I think they are doing a marketing gimmick. There’s zero benefit a consumer gets from that.”

In other words: 32 bits ought to be good enough for anybody.

64-bit processing gives you the ability to address more than 4GB, and the A7’s benefits go well beyond a wider address bus. Anand of Anandtech does a great job explaining the likely reasons why Apple’s making the move to 64-bit mobile computing, so I’ll let him have the last word.

How to Install Rails 4 on Windows (Including Windows 8 and 8.1)

My trusty early-2011 15″ MacBook Pro — standard issue at Shopify at the time, and a fabulous parting gift from them — is in the shop again. There’s something going on with its MagSafe daughterboard, or at least I hope it’s just that daughterboard. Daughterboard replacements are relatively cheap, but if it’s the motherboard that’s fried, it might be better for me to buy a new Macbook. Normally, that wouldn’t be so bad a prospect, but money’s a little tight right now.

I still have a 20″ 2007-era iMac with its RAM maxed out to 6GB in my living room. It’ll let me continue with iOS development, but as a desktop unit, it’s stuck at home. My portable unit is a ThinkPad T430, a Core i5 machine that could use a little extra RAM but is otherwise decent. It runs both Ubuntu 12.04 (a.k.a. “Precise Pangolin”) and Windows 8.1 (a.k.a. “Return of the Start Button”). I’ve got Rails 4 installed on the Ubuntu side, but until now, I kept running into roadblocks trying to get it on the Windows side.

Rails was built on and for Unix-y systems, and relies on the features built into them. As a result, it’s not a natural fit for Windows. Luckily for Windows users, there are people who work hard on getting it to work on The Empire’s operating system. It means that when a new Rails release comes out, you have to wait for those people to come up with the magic recipe to make it work on Windows.

If you’ve been waiting for a way to get Rails 4 to work on Windows — even the latest version, Windows 8.1 — that magic recipe exists today, and Jonathan Macdonald shares the recipe in a series of videos! I followed these steps last night, and I’ve now got Rails 4 up and running on Windows 8.1 Pro.

The only difference that’s apparent to me so far is that if you follow these instructions, you have to use MySQL as your database rather than the default SQLite3. I’ve heard of a number of problems getting SQLite3 to work with Rails on Windows, which may be why this is the case. The end result is that if you want to create a new project, you’ll enter a slightly longer command:

rails new your_project_name -d mysql

The recipe has 5 steps, each with its own video:

  1. Install MySQL
  2. Install Ruby 2.0
  3. Install Git (and use it to clone something you need for the next step)
  4. Build the MySQL gem
  5. Install Rails

How I Embarrassed Myself in My Interview with Google: The Thrilling Conclusion!

cannot brain today smallReaders of this blog will know that last Thursday, I completely embarrassed myself in the technical part of a phone interview with Google for a developer advocate position in either Mountain View or New York. The guy who interviewed me — himself a developer advocate —  loved my resume, and I think I did quite well in the non-technical part of the interview. However, when it came down to showing that I could program, I managed to do the complete opposite. In a semi-live coding exercise (“semi-live” meaning typing code into a Google doc rather than into something that could execute the code), I made some total n00b mistakes so bad that I wouldn’t have hired me.

Strangely enough, I missed a call from the person who arranged the interview a couple days later. She left a message, saying that she wanted to speak to me about the interview.

I tweeted this:

I called her, only to land in her voice mail. Over the next few days, the game of phone tag continued until she managed to catch me a few minutes ago at the time of this writing.

“I’m sorry, but it appears that we won’t be going forward with the interview process after all,” she said.

I knew this was coming and had already dealt with the disappointment and the blow to my pride. “I figured as much,” I replied. “It wasn’t my finest moment.”

“However,” she said very quickly, “and this is very unusual: it was suggested that you might make a good PGM. A program manager.”

That caught me by surprise. “Beg pardon?” I asked.

“It’s not as technical a role, and I’m not sure it’s something you’d be into, but it does require technical knowledge, and it also requires a people person. I can see if I can connect you with the right person to talk to, but your best bet is to apply online.”

“I have to consider that,” I said. “Thank you.”

In the end, I’ll gladly take any result that isn’t a complete loss and run with it. I can easily follow up and see what sorts of program manager positions they’re looking to fill, and in the meantime, I’m talking to a number of people about some very interesting opportunities.

Microsoft’s Frank X. Shaw and Their Oxygen Deprivation Problem

I used to think I had a tough job at Microsoft. I used to half-joke that any fool could evangelize Apple or Google, but it took a special kind of fool to evangelize Microsoft. And among my fellow fools — the Developer and Platform Evangelism team at Microsoft Canada, a smart, great bunch of people with whom I’m still in touch today, to the chagrin of some — I took on the doubly-foolish role of talking to people outside the Microsoft “echo chamber” and in the world of open source and non-Microsofty technologies. I also took on the challenge of being a Windows Phone Champ before and during the Windows Phone 7 launch (remember when it was called “Windows Phone 7 Series”?). Tough as that job was, Microsoft’s Frank X. Shaw has a much tougher job than I ever had. My job was to promote just Microsoft’s developer tools and technologies. Even the most ardent of Microsoft-hating developers, if you talk to them long enough, you’ll always end up with some grudging respect for their development tools like Visual Studio, and for the various ways they support their development community. As the head honcho of corporate communications at The Empire, Shaw has to tell the Microsoft story from every angle: not just the developer angle, but the business angle, the shareholder angle, the consumer angle, the tech media angle, and so on. When Vanity Fair published their damning Microsoft’s Lost Decade article that made its way into discussions all over the web, it fell to Shaw to respond. When Windows 8 got compared to New Coke (if you’re too young to remember, it’s what happened when Coke tried messing with their formula in the 1980s), it was Shaw’s job to fire back.

Shaw’s latest challenge is dealing with the fallout from earlier this week, when the following happened:

Shaw came out swinging in a blog post titled Apples and Oranges, defending Surface among other things, but being especially defensive of Office. Among his points:

  • “iWork has never gotten much traction, and was already priced like an afterthought, it’s hardly that surprising or significant a move”
  • Anything that isn’t Microsoft Office is “non-standard, non-cross-platform, imitation apps that can’t share docs with the rest of the world”
  • “As consumers got a taste of devices that could really help them get things done, they would see alternatives as being more limited”
  • What Apple is doing is just an “attempt to play catch up”

It’s the standard set of “dismiss, defend, disrupt” tactics that have been Microsoft’s stock in trade since its inception, except that their “disrupt” game hasn’t been all that hot lately, especially in the mobile world. That leaves dismiss and defend as Shaw’s two cards to play, which leaves him using a 21st century version of the old “Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM” game. In playing these cards, he often has to stretch and deal with some unfortunate realities, and as a result often ends up coming off as Microsoft’s answer to the Iraqi Information Minister, a.k.a. “Chemical/Comical Ali” or “Baghdad Bob”.

John Gruber, who’s Shaw’s freelance opposite, hits the nail on the head when he says that while Office is everywhere, it isn’t a standard — at least not in the same way that 110 or 220 volts is a standard, or how TCP/IP, HTTP, and Unicode are standards: de jure standards. Office is a de facto standard that resulted from the Matthew Effect; people use it because other people use it. If you apply Shaw’s “standards” logic to mobile tech, then iOS and Android are standards, and Windows Phone and Windows RT are not.

Let’s also forget that Office is oftentimes the thing we have to use, but don’t want to use. Don’t believe me? Just write an article like Charlie Stross’ Why Microsoft Word Must Die and look at the responses you get.

If you want an amusing take on Apples and Oranges, ITWire has written an amusing version that asks “What if Shaw has written Apples and Oranges in 2007?”. It includes this gem:

Windows and Office ended up reaching every corner of the globe and powering every academic institution, industry and profession. Of course both Windows and Office are evolving all the time – to reflect the way people work today – more file formats, more mobile and connected through the email attachment.

Now we’re doing this with Windows Mobile phone, and you can be certain: the future for Windows Mobile is strong. This iPhone nonsense is, as Steve Ballmer says, something businesses – or most anyone – isn’t going for.

Windows Mobile -OWNS- the business market – heck we’re about to release Windows Mobile 6.5, our best yet – that business and consumer market share isn’t going anywhere, and no-one else is going to be dumb enough to try and compete.

iPhone is a rip-off name too, like iPod was. Windows Mobile ran on an iPaq long before Apple’s iRipoffs landed on the scene.

Oxygen Deprivation

It’s not just the big players who are taking on Microsoft where they live. Smaller players, such as ZOHO, are getting in on the “let’s get Microsoft” game. Their PR department has been sending out an Creative Commons article written by Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu, who writes this about Microsoft’s problem:

The near-zero revenue share that competitors to Windows had meant that Google and Apple could give away their operating systems (which Apple also announced today!) and not have anything to lose. What Google achieves with the $0 Chrome OS license it charges OEMs (which costs Google exactly $0 in foregone operating system revenue) is that the OEM will now turn around and ask Microsoft for a $0 Windows license.

What OS X, iOS, Android and Chrome OS have collectively achieved is to drive Windows market share to under 25 percent of all client devices, and yet these alternative operating systems derive near zero revenue in and of themselves.

There is really not much Microsoft can do to fight back to stop the erosion of these core franchises. Their traditional weapons — closing the document format, tying the Office suite closer to Windows — none of these weapons work anymore. Today, for the first time in a couple of decades, Microsoft faces serious competition in Office from competitors who, for their own reasons, all want to tear down the monopoly. Why do Apple or Google or Zoho all want to commoditize Microsoft Office? Each company has its own reason: Apple wants to add value to its world-class devices; Google wants to extend the reach of its web services; and for Zoho, the Office suite is one part of our broader work-oriented application suite. As I have argued above, underlying these different strategies is a more fundamental reason: Why not tear down a market where we face a monopoly? Apple would want to stop Microsoft from being able to leverage the Office franchise and money into tablets and smartphones; Google would want to stop Microsoft from being able to pour money into Bing indefinitely and so on. Bill Gates would know what it means to “cut off the oxygen supply” — after all, it was a phrase he invented while finishing off Netscape. Apple and Google recognize, just as we do at Zoho, that the $12+ billion in oxygen (aka operating income) that Microsoft Office contributes to the mothership is now extremely vulnerable.

The Windows and Office monopolies have massively incentivized the broader ecosystem to come up with business models that drive down the value of those core Microsoft franchises to near zero. This is the price Microsoft has paid with its profoundly anti-competitive tactics of the 90s; every single player in the ecosystem, from their once-slavishly-loyal OEMs to would-be competitors, all want to see their market shrunk to zero. Microsoft has punished itself more than the Justice Department could ever have done.
